Top 7 Reasons Why Your WiFi is Connected but There is No Internet

Top 7 Reasons Why Your WiFi is Connected but There is No Internet

In this article, we’ll be looking at the biggest culprits as to why you can’t use the internet despite being able to connect to your wifi.

1.  The Wifi Router itself

The Wifi Router itself

There are different kinds of router models out there but the most common way to know if your router is the problem is by looking at the 4 main labels: Power, DSL, Internet, and WLAN.

If those 4 labels are lit up like a Christmas tree, your internet should be alright. If not, here are some causes:

  • If one of the 4 major labels on your modem (Power, Internet, DSL, WLAN) does not light up or is in a red light, there is a malfunction in your model.

  • If one of the 4 major labels (Power, Internet, DSL, WLAN) does not light up or is in a red light, it’s possible that your internet provider is having problems.

  • Outdated model that couldn’t catch up with the internet provider’s firmware

  • Broken model possibly due to falling or a doggo thought it was food and tried to chew it

Loose cable that results in inconsistent connection

Solution/s

Truly the best way to solve such issue is by doing the textbook restart. If that doesn’t help, there are always a couple more ways to do so. Here they are:

Restarting your modem

  • Turn off your modem using the on/off button

  • Take out the cable and switch

  • Wait for at least 20 seconds to a maximum of 2 mins

  • Put back the cable and the switch and turn the modem on again

Changing the cable

  • If you feel like it’s the cable’s fault, just switch out with a new one like this 50-feet modem cable.

Call your internet provider

  • If all else fails, know that it could be on the internet provider’s side that’s causing no internet within your household.

  • What you want to do is call an operator and ask for a visit from the tech team to check out what’s wrong

  • It could either be a faulty wiring or the modem itself. Whichever reason is, they’ll definitely change it for free

2. Network Card Drivers

Network Card Drivers

It looks like a complicated matter but believe us, it’s simpler than it actually is. Network card drivers can cause your device, most particularly the PC, to lose the ability to surf the web.

One of the bigger hassles as to why your mobile device or computer keeps disconnecting from wifi is because of the failed network card drivers.

  • This is either due to complications in the device registration or another crack in the registry.

Solution

The best way to do this is to restart your driver itself. Read carefully and follow the instructions:

  • Click Start and then open Control Panel.

  • From there, go to Hardware and Sound.

  • After clicking on Hardware and Sound, you should see Devices and Printers.

  • Under Devices and Printers, click Device Manager.

  • Find Network Adapters and open the subpanel. You should find different adapters there.

  • One by one, select an adapter and click Update Driver Software, located on the upper portion of the window.

When you’re done updating, restart the computer.

3. IP Address Conflict

IP Address Conflict

We’ve said this in Top 7 Reasons Why Your Internet Keeps Disconnecting and we’ll say it again.

A very odd issue within the confines of connected devices to your wifi is that they can lead to a mix-up within the IP addresses.

  • The router is confused where to deliver the internet data to which device because of similarities within their IP addresses.

  • Duplicates happen like a phone and a laptop having the same code of 192.168.1.5.

  • When there are duplicate IP addresses, the router won’t be able to send the internet to each device.

  • Every connected device must have its own exclusive IP Address

Solution

Simply the best way to resolve such issue is by contacting your internet provider via their tech support. However, if the tech support isn’t available, here are a few steps to solve the issue:

On computers (Windows Vista/7/8/10)

Based on Netgear.com on how to set a static IP for your computer.

  • Go to Start, then Control Panel and then Network and Sharing Center.

  • Click on Change adapter settings.

  • Right-click on Local Area Connection and choose Properties.

  • From there, choose Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties, which is next to the Install and Uninstall buttons.

  • Click on Use the following IP address. Fill in all the information. If you’re not sure about this part, you must consult your internet provider so they’ll share you the info you need.

  • Click OK and exit the Local Area Connection.

On Android devices

  • Go to Settings

  • Tap Connections

  • Select Wi-Fi

  • Hold down on the wi-fi network you’re connected to and choose Manage Network Settings

  • A pop-up should appear, revealing the IP address and Gateway.

  • Ignore the gateway and tap on IP Address and fill out the given info (Example: 192.168.1.5)

4. WiFi Adapter

WiFi Adapter

If everything else is fine from the router to the IP address but you still can’t connect to the internet, it’s possible that your wifi adapter is causing the big problem.

There’s really no direct reason why the adapter itself isn’t letting you use the internet, however, it’s a good thing the adapter itself has a premade troubleshooter.

Solution

On a Windows 7+ computer:

  • On the lower right corner of the taskbar, you should find the Network icon. Right-click on the Network icon

  • Choose Troubleshoot Problems

  • It should tell you the specific problem of your internet connection and if you think the problem is out of reach, call your local internet provider.

5. DNS Issues

DNS Issues

This is where things get deeper. The device always has a local DNS within the software that receives the internet data from the router.

Due to some complications, the DNS is piling up cache files that block the internet date from getting delivered to the device.

Solutions

There are two ways to solve it based on your situation.

If you can connect to the internet but can’t go to particular websites like streaming websites or even adult-themed websites, you must change the DNS server address.

On Windows 7+ Computer

  • Click Start, and open the Control Panel.

  • From there, click Network and Internet.

  • Click on Network and Sharing Center.

  • Choose Manage Wireless Networks on the very left of the screen.

  • Select the network you’re connected to and click Adapter Properties.

  • On the Networking tab, double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

  • Select Use the following DNS server addresses:

  • On the preferred DNS server, fill it with 8 . 8 . 8 . 8.

  • On the alternate DNS server, fill it with 8 .8 .4 .4.

  • Click OK and exit.

  • Now restart your router.

On an Android device

  • Go to Settings.

  • Tap Connections.

  • Tap WI-FI.

  • Hold down on the wifi you’re connected to and choose Manage network settings.

  • Scroll down and you should see DNS 1 and DNS 2.

  • On DNS 1, fill it with 8 . 8 . 8 . 8.

  • On DNS 2, fill it with 8 .8 .4 .4.

  • Exit the menu.

  • Now restart your router.

6. Admin Settings in Wireless Mode

Admin Settings in Wireless Mode

Another reason as to how you have no internet access is within the admin settings itself. You must do this with the help of either a computer internet browser or your mobile phone.

It can be solved by going to the router dashboard of your internet.

Solutions

On Windows 7+ Computer

  • Open your internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, IE, whichever you prefer).

  • On the address bar, type 192.168.1.1

  • This will open up the router dashboard.

  • In case you’re asked for the Username and Password, you must contact your internet provider to tell you. Only they know what the admin username and password are.

  • When you finally enter, select the Interface Setup tab.

  • Within the Access Point Settings, you should find Wireless Mode there.

  • Click on Wireless Mode and choose 802.11 g.

  • Exit the program.

  • Restart your router.

On Android device

  • Go to Settings.

  • Tap Connections.

  • Tap WI-FI.

  • Tap on the wifi you’re connected to and you should see Manage router

  • Tap on the highlighted IP address.

7. Downloads through Torrent or Game Client

Downloads through Torrent or Game Client

When you’re downloading something heavy like a video game or a movie, chances are, the device that’s downloading the files are absorbing all that precious internet speed to the downloads.

On Torrent

  • Open your Torrent program.

  • Find the program that you are downloading and right-click on it.

  • Choose Bandwidth Allocation and select Low. This should stop the torrent file from sucking up all the internet speed and distribute it equally to browsers.

  • If you want to browse without any delays at all, just exit your torrent program by going to File and then Exit.

On a Game Client

There are numerous game clients out there like Steam, Origins, Uplay, and Garena, but in this case, let’s just go with Steam. The solution will be similar for other game clients.

  • When you open Steam, you should click Steam on the very upper left of the screen.

  • Go to Settings.

  • Choose the Downloads tab and you should find Limit Bandwidth to.

  • From there, choose a speed that’s lesser than your average internet speed.

  • That should stop Steam from absorbing all the internet speed from the router and you’ll be able to use the browser again while downloading at minimum speed.

If you still feel like the browsing is too slow, you should either quit the client or stop the download itself. Here’s how:

  • Exit Steam by going to the Steam tab and press Exit

  • If you want to keep Steam on but want to stop the game from downloading, go to Library and right-click the game highlighted in blue (blue letters means it’s downloading).

  • Click Manage Downloads….

  • On the upper right corner, click Pause.
