Top 7 Reasons Why Your WiFi is Connected but There is No Internet

In this article, we’ll be looking at the biggest culprits as to why you can’t use the internet despite being able to connect to your wifi.

There are different kinds of router models out there but the most common way to know if your router is the problem is by looking at the 4 main labels: Power, DSL, Internet, and WLAN.

If those 4 labels are lit up like a Christmas tree, your internet should be alright. If not, here are some causes:

  • If one of the 4 major labels on your modem (Power, Internet, DSL, WLAN) does not light up or is in a red light, there is a malfunction in your model.

  • Duplicates happen like a phone and a laptop having the same code of 192.168.1.5.

  • When there are duplicate IP addresses, the router won’t be able to send the internet to each device.

  • Every connected device must have its own exclusive IP Address

Solution

Simply the best way to resolve such issue is by contacting your internet provider via their tech support. However, if the tech support isn’t available, here are a few steps to solve the issue:

On computers (Windows Vista/7/8/10)

  • Go to Start, then Control Panel and then Network and Sharing Center.

  • Click on Change adapter settings.

  • Right-click on Local Area Connection and choose Properties.

On Android devices

  • Go to Settings

  • Hold down on the wi-fi network you’re connected to and choose Manage Network Settings

  • A pop-up should appear, revealing the IP address and Gateway.

  • Ignore the gateway and tap on IP Address and fill out the given info (Example: 192.168.1.5)

On Windows 7+ Computer

  • Click Start, and open the Control Panel.

  • From there, click Network and Internet.

  • Click on Network and Sharing Center.

  • Choose Manage Wireless Networks on the very left of the screen.

  • Select the network you’re connected to and click Adapter Properties.

  • On the Networking tab, double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

  • Select Use the following DNS server addresses:

  • On the preferred DNS server, fill it with 8 . 8 . 8 . 8.

  • On the alternate DNS server, fill it with 8 .8 .4 .4.

  • Click OK and exit.

  • Now restart your router.

On an Android device

  • Go to Settings.

  • Tap Connections.

  • Tap WI-FI.

  • Hold down on the wifi you’re connected to and choose Manage network settings.

  • Scroll down and you should see DNS 1 and DNS 2.

  • On DNS 1, fill it with 8 . 8 . 8 . 8.

  • On DNS 2, fill it with 8 .8 .4 .4.

  • Exit the menu.

  • Now restart your router.

Another reason as to how you have no internet access is within the admin settings itself. You must do this with the help of either a computer internet browser or your mobile phone.

It can be solved by going to the router dashboard of your internet.

Solutions

On Windows 7+ Computer

  • Open your internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, IE, whichever you prefer).

  • On the address bar, type 192.168.1.1

  • This will open up the router dashboard.

  • In case you’re asked for the Username and Password, you must contact your internet provider to tell you. Only they know what the admin username and password are.

  • When you finally enter, select the Interface Setup tab.

  • Within the Access Point Settings, you should find Wireless Mode there.

  • Click on Wireless Mode and choose 802.11 g.

  • Exit the program.

  • Restart your router.

On Android device

  • Go to Settings.

  • Tap Connections.

  • Tap WI-FI.

  • Tap on the wifi you’re connected to and you should see Manage router

  • Tap on the highlighted IP address.

  • In case you’re asked for the Username and Password, you must contact your internet provider to tell you. Only they know what the admin username and password are.

7. Downloads through Torrent or Game Client

When you’re downloading something heavy like a video game or a movie, chances are, the device that’s downloading the files are absorbing all that precious internet speed to the downloads.

On Torrent

  • Open your Torrent program.

  • Find the program that you are downloading and right-click on it.

  • Choose Bandwidth Allocation and select Low. This should stop the torrent file from sucking up all the internet speed and distribute it equally to browsers.

  • If you want to browse without any delays at all, just exit your torrent program by going to File and then Exit.

On a Game Client

There are numerous game clients out there like Steam, Origins, Uplay, and Garena, but in this case, let’s just go with Steam. The solution will be similar for other game clients.

  • When you open Steam, you should click Steam on the very upper left of the screen.

  • Go to Settings.

  • Choose the Downloads tab and you should find Limit Bandwidth to.

  • From there, choose a speed that’s lesser than your average internet speed.

  • That should stop Steam from absorbing all the internet speed from the router and you’ll be able to use the browser again while downloading at minimum speed.

If you still feel like the browsing is too slow, you should either quit the client or stop the download itself. Here’s how:

  • Exit Steam by going to the Steam tab and press Exit

  • If you want to keep Steam on but want to stop the game from downloading, go to Library and right-click the game highlighted in blue (blue letters means it’s downloading).

  • Click Manage Downloads….

  • On the upper right corner, click Pause.
